Good afternoon,
First of all, sorry for writing in english. My name is Jose Alvarez, I am a spanish aircraft mechanic who lives in Germany (Aachen area).
I am really interested in building a Kiebitz and I would like to know if it could be possible to register the project as an LSA aircraft in order to fly it with the LSA or the PPL license. My problem is that I don't have the ultralight license but I have the PPL (EASA) license.
Thank you very much for your help.

Hola Jose,
As the german UL licencse is directed to Germans, you have to read it like: To fly in controlled airspace at least a radio operators license in german (BZF 2) is required. If you speak english and hold a valid ICAO conform radio operators license (AZF) it is legal to use that. Only disadvantage is: Small airfields often are unable to answer in english so it might be a good idea to learn some german.

Hola Jose,
Where did you get the information, that you need to speek german for ul licence? Checking the DAeC homepage , it says you need a active PPL with 12 hrs and 12 landings during the last 24month and It does not say you need a „German PPL“. That means you will need one hrs of training with a flight instructor, an introduction in Technik, Pyrotechnik, Verhalten in Besonderen Fällen and a short checkflight with the head of training (Ausbildungsleiter)

Hola Jose!
I would strongly recommend NOT to consider registration as LSA - not even as Homebuild project. Being a retired Aircraft Design Engineer I have worked a lot with the Airworthiness Authorities ... apart from the finencial impacts negotiating with them how to certify the Kiebitz as LSA would take years...
1) you would have to do the complete certification horror process with EASA on your own - probably with no support at all (or at least very, very minor) from the Kiebitz Designer Michael Platzer
2) the Kiebitz has never been intended to act as a certified aircraft - as such most materials used in construction are not "certified materials". As such you would have to redesign the complete aircraft.
I propose to consider getting an UL license - with your PPL license this is a matter of very few flight hours and neglegible amount of theory courses, in addition no checks by an official Examiner.
Good luck

Hi Lucky! My plan is to fly in Germany but my German language is very bad. With the PPL license and the English ICAO license I could fly in English. I heard that for the Ultraleicht license I need to speak German.

Hola Jose,
sorry, my spanish is a little rusty, but my english is only slightly better.
La primera pregunta es: ¿Donde quieres volar con el Kiebitz? Con solo unas pocas lecciones, puedes actualizar su licencia PPL a Ultraleicht aqui in Alemania. Tienes que preguntar una escuela de vuolo.
Greetings Lucky
